Ash Kamel Engineering Leader

About

I’m a Senior Engineering Manager at GitHub, where my teams build the AI-native collaboration foundations behind GitHub Projects — including the REST APIs enabling MCP server and Copilot chat integration. I translate AI-first product strategy into platform primitives, and I care deeply about building teams that ship with craft and velocity.

How I Lead

I believe the best engineering leaders are facilitators, not directors. At GitHub, I introduced pitch-driven roadmap planning where engineers submit initiatives with context, goals, and metrics — building strategic thinking and ownership across the team rather than handing down priorities. I’ve coached engineers through performance challenges into technical leadership roles, and I measure my success by the growth of the people around me.

I’m drawn to the work of building teams from zero. At Zip Co, I stood up a Platform Engineering team from scratch — defining its charter and adopting a product-focused mindset for internal tooling. At SoulCycle, I led the transition to a service-oriented architecture that became the foundation for the company’s connected fitness products.

Background

Before engineering leadership, I spent years as an individual contributor building across the full stack — startups, agencies, and co-founding ventures. That foundation shapes how I lead: with a bias toward clarity, craft, and getting things out the door.

Outside of work, I spent over a decade as a U.S. Soccer Federation match official and referee coach, officiating across MLS Reserve, International Friendlies, NASL, and USL Pro. The pattern recognition, composure under pressure, and real-time decision-making from that experience show up in how I lead engineering teams every day.
